Innes Ireland was perhaps one of the first drivers to have a ‘helmet design’ with his famous chequered band around his white helmet.
Prior to his more recognisable design, Ireland wore a yellow Herbert Johnson helmet and this here is that very piece. Used when he was racing in sports cars such as Lotus Eleven’s & Jaguar D-Types this helmet would have seen action at Goodwood, Le Mans, Reims and other great circuits from the past.
The helmet comes in it’s original box along with a set of Ireland’s gloves, goggles & spare lens’. It shows great signs of use but remains in great condition. The helmet was auctioned by Sotheby’s as part of the Innes Ireland estate and is the ‘complete package’ from this legendary Scottish driver.
